The Gamma Deuteron Chapter at Ohio Wesleyan
Kappa Alpha Theta, here at Ohio Wesleyan, was first granted its charter when 18 promising young women wrote to headquarters asking to be lifted up like kites into Kappa Alpha Theta. Headquarters immediately were pleased and granted their charter in June of 1881. Due to faculty opposition on campus, the Ohio Wesleyan Thetas known as the Gamma Ohio remained inactive for over 50 years. This ruling, applied to all sororities, abolished the chapter on campus stating that “secret societies among young women are in no case allowed”. Finally on May 31, 1924 Ohio Wesleyan's Charter was re-established and known hence forth as the Gamma deuteron Chapter. Kappa Alpha Theta was the first Panhellenic group to own a house, which was purchased in 1946. Over the next 8 years other Panhellenic greek groups followed Kappa Alpha Theta’s example in owning houses.
