CASA: Court Appointed Special Advocates
Court Appointed Special Advocates, or CASA, is the national philanthropy of Kappa Alpha Theta fraternity. CASA provides an invaluable service for children going through the court system. CASA makes sure there is qualified, compassionate adult fighting for and protecting the child's right to be safe, treated with dignity and respect, to learn and grow in the security of a loving family.
Presently there are over 77,000 advocates serving in nearly 1,000 state and local program offices nationwide. CASA programs are known by many names including Guardian and Litem, Child Advocates and Voices for Children. Over the years CASA has helped over 240,000 abused and neglected children find safe, permanent homes where they can thrive. These programs provide safe places where the displaced children can find the security needed to grow and reach their full potential.
Children who have been assigned to CASA volunteers tend to spend less time in court and in foster care than those who do not have CASA representation. The advocated children have better chances of finding permanent homes. Also the CASA cases are more likely to be reviewed on a regular basis by the courts.
